Sue Christensen, Indiana, receives the David P. Weikhart International.
Sue Christensen, Alumnae Council member, and her colleague Ann Rosen received the David Weikart Achievement Award at the High/Scope International Conference for their dedication to excellence in the implementation of the HighScope Curriculum and influence in establishing exemplary preschool programing in their community. The HighScope Educational Reserch Foundation presents the annual award to a recipient (or recipients) who have made outstanding contributions to the field of early childhood care and education.
Janet Jendron, long-time member of the Alumnae Council and former Board Member of La Leche League International, accepted the position of President of the Board for Attachment Parenting International (API) in the spring of 2009. API is a nonprofit organization with a mission to educate and support all parents in raising secure, joyful and empathic children in order to strengthen families and create a more compassionate world.
Karen Zeretzke, ACL of Alabama/Mississippi/Louisiana, was honored in May 2007 for her contribution to child abuse prevention through educating mothers-to- be and new mothers about early childhood development and mother-infant bonding. For more than 30 years, Karen has volunteered with the Baton Rouge Park and Recreation Commission, St. George Catholic Church and St. George School to make those places and program mother- and baby-friendly. She believes the best ways to prevent child abuse are through parent education, family bonding and a strong support system. Prevent Child Abuse Louisiana described Karen as always putting the smallest ones first and focusing on creating an environment that is child-centered and designed for success. "Through her quiet advocacy, she has made a tremendous contribution to families in our state and nation." Karen and her husband, Frederick, have eight children... "of their own, all of whom would gladly agree that their mom is a Champion for them, as well as for all children."
Former LLL Leader (Erie, Pennsylvania) and romance novelist Holly Jacobs Fuhrmann (she writes under both Holly Jacobs and Holly Furhmann) hit WaldenBooks' Top Ten list in mid-July with her newest book—the second in a trilogy—ONCE UPON A PRINCE, Silhouette Romance, 7/05. Carolyn Markham, LLL Northampton, Great Britain, will represent the National Childbirth Trust as Consumer Representative on the National Institute for Clinical Excellence (NICE) Guideline Development Group for Intrapartum Care. NICE works on behalf of the National Health Service and the people who use it. The body makes recommendations on treatments and care using the best available evidence. This group will be concerned with writing the guidelines relating to the care of women during birth.
New Zealand Royal Honours were bestowed upon Anne Devereux, who was designated a Companion of the Queen’s Service Order (QSO) for Community Service for her LLL work.
Anne was instrumental in the formation of LLLNZ and is her country’s longest serving active Leader. She also was an active member of the LLLI Board. Past Board of Directors president Cindy Smith wrote in support of this prestigious award on behalf of LLLI.
“Beyond her official positions on the BOD, Anne earned the respect of her fellow Board members and the admiration of the LLL community with her work in New Zealand as an adjudicator for appeals for the New Zealand Code of Practice for the Marketing of Infant Formula and as a National Assessor and Trainer for the Baby Friendly Hospital Initiative. In her acceptance of these responsibilities, Anne demonstrates her commitment to breastfeeding and assures that her country will meet or exceed ‘best practices’ in regard to feeding for their youngest citizens.…
“Anne is a woman whose life is a reflection of her deeply held values of children, family, and service to others. LLLI has been honoured by her service to our organization over the past 30 years. We fully support her recognition as an outstanding citizen of New Zealand by the receipt of this prestigious award.”
All four LLLNZ Directors, past and present, plus Anne’s husband, were on hand to watch Anne be honoured at an investiture at Government House in Wellington, New Zealand’s capital city.
