Ann Marie Uhlman, Marmora, New Jersey USA: Expecting my first child in 1977 was a turning point in my life but it wasn't until I read The Womanly Art of Breastfeeding, given to me by a dear aunt, did I realize the path I wanted to take. Nursing my son and subsequent 3 other children was only the beginning of the parenting style and philosophy that my husband and I adopted. Now at age 54 I am still in awe of how LLL turned my life around and contributed to a love-style for my kids based on their needs, respect and 'hearing' them as individuals, no matter how young. The LLL philosphy also established our guidelines on childbirth, nutrition, medical care and the family bed. Losing Greg, my 3rd son, at age 18 in a car accident 5 yrs ago, has created a new normal in our lives. Dealing with his loss continues to be so difficult but I have no regrets as his mother and how I know he felt and realized my love throughout his life. I truly believe that LLL was the stepping stone that led me to where I needed to be
as a mother and human being. With gratitude for your continuing contributions to families everywhere. [Mar 2008]
Sherri L Cook, Laurel, Maryland USA: I have been an IBCLC for ten years now and have LLL to thank for getting me started on this career path. Keep up the good work, leaders. [Feb 2008]
Peg Havener, New Britain, Pennsylvania USA: I have come full circle it seems...the children are grown (18,23,27) but meanwhile I went back to college and completed my bachelor of science in nursing degree and after a few years of critical care nursing find myself working at our (former) Pediatrician's office and they are interested in utilizing my background as a retired La Leche League Leader and retired IBCLC which of course means studying to take that exam AGAIN... I am still debating, but as my oldest is already calling for advice for his friend's new babies (no grandchildren yet) I guess maybe I should take the plunge. Oh and by the way my breastfed children are doing very well, thanks to all the help and love from LLL along the way. I pass it on whenever I can to the timid mothers of nursing toddlers who whisper their secret to me at physicals now. LLLove to you all and Thanks, Peg. (ACL PA-E 1990 or so) If anyone needs study participants who exclusively nursed, or nursed toddlers feel free to contact me. [Jan 2008]
Karen A. Evon (formerly McQuaid), Sacramento, California USA: My "roots" in LLL go back to 1969, pregnant with my third when I read a poster advertizing group meetings in Gary, Indiana. It was posted in the community room at the mobil home park where we rented a trailer while my husband worked on a construction job site. We moved before I contacted LLL in Gary, but I remembered the name of that group on the poster, and called when we relocated to Buffalo, NY. I attended 3 meetings before our daughter was born and I felt as though I had "come home"! These mom's talked about the way I wanted to be a mother. Since I had connected with the group leader and other mothers, I called for help after she was born and "finally" became the successful breastfeeding mother that I tried to be with my first two children. It was a wonderful feeling that I remember fondly today.
I became a Leader in 1971, and actively lead and volunteered on many areas of LLL work -- chapter, local, and international. I was on reserve for several years, finally retired and now am in the process of re-activating ! Ewina ! you are my hero and inspiration. I sat in awe at your feet when you led part of "my" leader applicant workshop in 1970 ! It's because you started a new group in your elder years that I feel confident that I can still help LLL too.
Fast Forward to today .. I sat the IBCLC boards in 1986, and have worked for for 20 years as IBCLC, first in private home based practice for 11 years, now I'm looking forward to selling Maternal Expressions, the Maternity and Breastfeeding Specialty STORE in Folsom, CA ( USA) that I have owned for over 12 years. Then I'll retire from retail, too! I am in process of re-activating my LLL Leadership so I can help Mom's on the new LLLI HelpLine.
If you have read my story thus far - maybe you can help me to find "my" leaders from the Buffalo NY group back in the early '70s. I remember "Joan Hitzkus" ?, and a "Mary" ??? Please help -- I'd love to re-connect and share stories.
I appreciate my long time friendlships with several wonderful women who are also LLL Leaders: Martha Peelor, Karen Dietzen, Patricia DuBray, Debbie Pierce, Katte Smith and others. If you remember Me ! contact me. [Jan 2008]
Angela (Feuerborn) Traynor, Overland Park, Kansas USA: I started going to LLL meetings in 1974 when my first child was born. I have eight children, now all grown, of course. I am teaching piano in Overland Park, KS. After raising my children, I went back to my first passion, music. [Jan 2008]
Edie Bellocchio, Brooklyn, New York USA: I was able to use my knowledge to help a new mom daughter (4 days old) learn how to hand express, pump, massage, different positions to feed, but mostly, to gain self confidence
to RELAX, so her milk flows freely. She was amazed that she could manually express, and watch it "shoot"(spray out) I even wept tears of joy as I saw her truly relax, watched the baby suckle and empty her engorged breasts. also taught her how not to let them get engorged, to nurse often, (every 2 hrs or so, as the baby needs, learn to "listen to her different cries,to enjoy being a mom, to know she's doing the best for her baby girl. I was thrilled to be of service again!!!
I have 3 children, 2 girls ages 25 and 20 and a son age 9. My 1st daughter I wasn't successful, no support from doctor either, she nursed for 1 month. While pregnant with #2, I was sooo determined to succeed I went to LLL before she arrived to learn as much as possible. My 2nd child had jaundice, they took her from me, put her under the "lights" left me for hours with sore engorged breasts. After 9 hours they hooked me up to an electric breast pump, turned it on HIGH and left me alone, needless to say, my nippies were "across the room!!!" I left the hospital without my baby, these huge upside down ice cream cone breasts immediately went to my LLL lifted my shirt showed them to her. She taught me a few tricks to release the milk... It worked!! When I finally got to nurse my daughter I was "POLLY DARTON" humongous breasts; we overcame all the opsticles to nurse for over 3 years. I became certified early on, received cert. on my birthday 10/31/88 or 89. I led the Dyker Heights group with Bliss Ann Herlihey for a good # of years. My Breast friend (truly we are the BREAST of friends) Lynn O'Conner I met through our group. We nursed our girls for 3 years. When my son was born in 1998, I was older (39) and had no problems I couldn't handle. I had rooming in with him, he never left my side (except to bathe etc, then daddy or grandma was there. He nursed for 15 months, weaned on his own.(I wasn't ready to give it up!!!) I hope and pray that my daughters will breastfeed (do NINNIES) and I can show them the ropes. I know becoming an LLL leader reshaped my life. I am very active in Girl Scouting, have 2 troops now, am on our service unit team, and Always ask anyone I meet/know who's expecting if they're thinking of "Nursing." I offer my services and have helped numerous people through these years, in person and by phone. I recommend LLL to everyone. I would love to become involved again in any capacity that I'm able. I am currently living in the Sunset Park area of Brooklyn. I am so thrilled to be writing to you after all these years. I would love to get in contact with former members/ leaders in my former group (Dyker Heights, Brooklyn, NY). Thank You for helping women to do what is NATURAL but somewhat pushed aside by formula companies /doctors etc who are'nt PRO-Breastfeeding. It truly changed my life!!! [Dec 2007]
Shelagh Gastrow, Cape Town, Western Cape, South Africa: Serving as a LLL leader was one of the most fullfilling and formative times of my life - the lessons I learnt have remained with me ever since and have contributed towards many successes that followed over the years. [Dec 2007]
Janet Daniel, Roswell, Georgia USA: Love the website!! I still refer women to LLL. What a wonderful group of people to have been associated with. [Nov 2007]

I have 4 teenagers at home!!! [Oct 2007]
Debora (Debbie) Lutz, Bakersfield Pennsylvania USA [Oct 2007]
Wendy G. Cochran, La Mirada, California USA: I loved being a LLLLeader! I now have a breastfed grandson who goes to meetings with my oldest daughter. It is a dream come true, seeing the breastfeeding "baton" passed on. I am studying Speech and Language Pathology (just earned my assistant degree) while working full time with children with special needs. I am very involved in the arts community as well.
My life was so blessed when I became a Leader...I gained skills that I have carried with me into the arenas of work and college. Being confident in my beliefs, knowing how to convey them discreetly yet passionately and supporting others in their own struggles and journeys through similar objectives...how powerful these skills have been! I am excited to know of the continued efforts of today's LLL Leaders! [Oct 2007]
Judy Gregory, Bakersfield California USA: I am now a RN Certified in Inpatient Obstetrics. In addition to my LLL experience I recieved Lactation Specialist training and I help Mommies and Babies at work. [Oct 2007]

Ann (Mease) Bodling, Elizabethtown, Pennsylvania USA: It has been such a long time since being frequently actively involved in supporting breastfeeding mothers. My own three children have either graduated from college or are now attending and every day I still find myself relating to them as I learned from the mothering guidance I received as a new member. It truly has shaped my children and the relationship we enjoy so much. Now I find I want to be back in touch with LLL. There is a local CNM who has been calling me for help and information for her breastfeeding moms for more than 5 years now and I enjoy being back in that role so much. Thanks. Ann [Oct 2007]
Ann Menz, Lufkin, Texas USA: Hello, I just found this site! Wow, we've come along way, baby. I was a member in Duluth, MN - I think the leader's name was Anne Nephew.(early 70's), Binghampton/Johnson City, NY (I actually lived in a town called Deposit, NY), I believe the leader's name was Pam, , (70's)and possibly Bemidji, MN (early 80's). My five children are now grown. I was a memeber in Duluth and a leader in training in NY. We moved away, and I never followed through to be a leader. It was a great time of mothering. LeLeche League offered wonderful support, and education re parenting, early child development, nutrition, pregnancy/nursing. I still remember with fondness the aqaintanceships and friendships I made. Such intelligent, astute, interesting women/mothers. I moved and have lost track of all of my former nursing buddies, but I will never forget them or Le Leche League. I was a member in 1969, the 70's and early 80's.
It was happy mothering then...now it is happy grandmothering!
During those days, some doctors thought we were pretty radical. We were the exception and not the rule. When my first child was born, I was the only one on the OB ward nursing. The nurse was of no help. LLL was my life line. I think the only book available on nursing was the LLL Manual. Can you imagine! LLL was a trailblazer for mother's and their babies. Thank you LLL, and Happy Anniversary! [Aug 2007]
Susan (Downey) Smtih, Newberg, Oregon USA: I am teaching full time elemtary Physical Education at Charles F.Tigard Elementary in Tigard, Oregon. I would love to have some contact with moms that I used to know from LLL who now must be grandmas! [Aug 2007]
Bobbe Lyon, Maitland, Florida USA: 50 years ! We started LLL in Milwaukee. WI in 1960. I took LL with me to MN in 1965 and FL in 1968. All my daughters (3) and daughters in law (2) breastfed a total of 11 babies. Life is rich. I learned the womanly art of mothering from La Leche League and I shall be forever grateful.[July 2007]
Beth Nelson, Marietta, South Carolina USA: My breastfed baby is 35 years old now. LLL was a wonderful philosophy and way of life for us. [July 2007]
Lisa Lundy, Buffalo, New York USA: I am just now publishing a book on food allergies, and I visited your site to make sure that I have the correct information about your invaluable group because I am recommending your group to breast feeding mothers. Keep up the excellent work! [June 2007]
Lisa Lundy, Buffalo, New York USA: I am just now publishing a book on food allergies, and I visited your site to make sure that I have the correct information about your invaluable group because I am recommending your group to breast feeding mothers. Keep up the excellent work! [June 2007]
Mary Beth Wagner, Elizabethtown, Pennsylvania USA: I attended LLL for about twelve years -- seven of those were as a leader. My happiest momories of our son's growing-up years are connected with LeLeche League. Today Our "boys" are thirty and thirty-three and one is about to become a first time papa!! Our first grandchild is due next month..Thank you for the good start you gave all of us -- our sons were blessed with good health and a wonderful attitude toward family and parenting, and my husband and I cherish thos special years of bonding and sharing with other parents the benifits and joys of breastfeeing. Unfortunatly, at this point our daughter-in-law is inclined toward bottle feeding. I try and remain "non-pushy, but will give it one more effort by sending her your URL...Bless you all..And Thanks again! [June 2007]
Glenni Lorick, Madison, Alabama USA: La Leche League was instrumental in my pursuing a career as an IBCLC. I will always be grateful to the Tallahassee, FL leaders and the Birmingham, AL leaders who helped me so much from 1988-199! [June 2007]
Victoria Bigelow, Brighton, Michigan USA: My experience with LLLI was overwhelmingly positive. It provided me with a support group of like-minded mothers, guidance, resources and a network of friends. Through my work as a LLL leader, I developed the confidence that would later lead me to become a college professor. My children are all grown and gone now, but they have many fond memories of LLL activities and friendships. They are greatful, as I am, for the many benefits they received from breastfeeding and from my involvement with the LLLI. [June 2007]
Jody Selig, Marietta, Rochester, Minnesota USA: I was a member until a leader informed me that I couldn't become a leader because I left my daughter in the care of her daddy when I worked one or two nights per week. I believe that you can be a wondeful mommy and still work. I went on to breastfed that daughter until she self weaned at age 33 months. Now I'm happily breastfeeding my second daughter who is now 13 months old. She continues to nurse on demand when I'm home just as her older sister did, and receives milk in a bottle when I'm away. I'm happy and proud to say that neither of my girls had a drop of formula and are happy, healthy girls. I do not believe it harmed them in any way that I work, and feel that they are closer to their daddy because of it. He has a great relationship with his girls and loves them just as much as I do. You do not have to have breasts to be a good and loving parent, there is a lot more to being a mommy or daddy than that. I feel that the local group discriminates against
working mom's and hope that some day they will see that just because you work you're not a bad parent. I feel that LLL does a lot of good things and can be a valuable resource if you're a stay-at-home mom. [June 2007]
Gloria Bussert-George, Spokane, Washington USA: Approved as Leader in 1972 in Warsaw,IN. Moved to Sunnyside, WA in 1973 - led mtgs in the Yakima Valley for many years. Julie Hill, Howell, Michigan USA: Every time I see a young mother breastfeeding her baby as if it's perfectly normal, my heart beats a little faster. With my youngest baby at 22, I am proud to be one of the women who helped changed a culture. [April 2006]

Maryanne Sheehy, Milford, New Jersey USA: My 29 year old daughter is expecting her first baby. I nursed her back in the 1970's for 2.5 years. This was not popular at all then. Cathryne Hall, Nashville, Tennessee USA: What a great website. My daughter in law, who is a leader, shared it with me. I've become a grandmother five times over since I retired and am blessed with daughters in law that both feel the same about the importance of breastfeeding. [March 2006]
Loris Pennington (formerly Loris Garrow), Bellevue, Washington USA: I was a leader from 1978-1984 And area coordinator of the Gray's Harbor Willipa Harbor area. I've been looking for information as I now have 5 grandbabies and 1 on the way. My oldest is now the proud mom of 3 and has helped promote breastfeeding even in her work place. as baby goes with her. Some of the Grandma's in the the Country tell her that's the way it should be and tell her boss that as well. She works in a laundry mat. [March 2006]
Marilyn M Milam, Kennett, Missouri USA: Have treasured memories of all the women whose paths crossed with mine from Baton Rouge, LA to Starkville MS especially MS where I was Leader, DA and AC. I do lots of breastfeeding education with moms that come to us, and I always refer them to a local leader and meeting for continuing help. I'm very proud of my affiliation with LLLI! Keep up the good work! [March 2006]
Terri Sturm, Emporia, Kansas USA: I was a leader back in the 70's and early 80's. Now my baby is expecting her 1st, Daddy is in the Military, and I couldn't think of a better "parenting support group" to share with her than La Leche League. [March 2006]
Jane Bucks, Helena, Montana USA: What a step back in time to be writing to LLLI! I recently received a letter from a LLL leader in Billings, MT, describing the current efforts to reconnect retired leaders with LLLI. I was delighted to be able to send a response. A few days later I had another, equally positive, opportunity to be in touch with Montana LLL. I am currently working at a therapeutic maternity home (the Florence Crittenton Home) here in Helena and was asked if I could help track down a breast pump for one of the young mothers. Within less than an hour and just two phone calls later (LLL in Billings and Bozeman, Montana), there were three new, donated breast pumps on their way to Helena. In addition, the Bozeman group offered to donate baby slings, books, information reprints and many other wonderful resources. Their large boxes of materials arrived yesterday and how proud I was of LLL when I delivered them to the director of the home. It is really quite nice to once again, after all these years, have a copy of The Womanly Art on my kitchen counter! [March 2006]
Mary Dolores Guerra, Phoenix, Arizona: Leche League was the first place I heard the phrase, "Follow your heart." I'm so grateful for my many experiences with LLL of Arizona and LLLI. I attended my first meeting in 1981 when my oldest son, Thomas, was five months old; he's 25 now. I was a young mom so I bought my mom to my first meeting. She was an experienced mom, 12 kids and nursed all of them. I remember feeling so welcomed and everyone was so nice to me. I had found home. I enjoyed the company of nursing moms; we all wanted what was best for our sons and daughters and what a gift to start them off breastfeeding. I knew I wanted to not only join this group of loving women but also to share what had been given me... more [March 2006]
Laurie Willits, Wingham, Ontario, Canada: I'm now working in the health care field as a medical laboratory technologist after staying at home for 17 years with my 5 children who were all happily breastfed for at least a year each (the last baby for much longer!) My "babies" have all thrived physically and emotionally due to breastfeeding, and the parenting style that we learned through my long association with LLL!!! I attended meetings for many years before taking on the challenge of becoming a leader! I enjoyed all aspects of my involvement with LLLCanada. I hope you'll be there for my daughters and daughters-in-law when our grand babies arrive!!! Thanks to all the volunteers out there!! [March 2006]
Kathi Kerlin, McKeesport, Pennsylvania USA: I am a former member of LaLeche League from Fayetteville, Georgia. It's been a very long time. My girls are now 28, 26, and 21. I was very young when I had the first one and Thank Heaven For La Leche League!! It was the best thing that ever happened in my Life back then!! How much I used to enjoy those meetings and even had some of the meetings at my house - Us mom's coming together to share our experiences was a beautiful time and a wonderful distraction from the every day chores we all had to face - it was relaxing, comforting, and a time that was very special. I don't think there are any better memories in my life than those precious times!!! My oldest daughter excelled in school and now has her Master's Degree (going for doctorate) and is a school teacher. (I like to think that breastfeeding her was a big part of the reason why she did so well.) She started out tiny and with jaundice and it was a bit hard getting started with breastfeeding - hence the reason why after almost giving up, I contacted LaLeche and the rest is history. She went on to nurse solely for the first year of life. I lost all of my weight quickly and was a young, thin, and very happy mommy of the most beautiful little girl, who has grown up to be someone I'm so proud of (sorry for bragging a little.) Now my middle daughter, Jenny (also a school teacher) is expecting her 1st baby in October (just found out) and I want to turn her on to LaLeche so she can experience some of those great moments I had back then. Life has gotten a lot "tougher" since those "quiet and comforting times," but I'm hoping my girls will experience the pleasures that I did when I was a member of LaLeche League. Thanks! [February 2006]
Loris (Garrow) Pennington, Bellevue, Washington USA: I was a LLL Leader in 1978-1984. I now have five grandchildren and my oldest a daughter is a working breastfeeding mom and a great avocate for breastfeeding. When the WIC nurse found out her mom was an old LLL leader she asked her questions! [February 2006]
Vicki Blake, Mesa, Arizona USA: Retired Leader from Illinois 1977-1997. Now teaching special education in Mesa, Arizona. Became a grandmother October of 2004 to twin girls. Both breastfed for approx. 14 months. The breastfeeding tradition carries on. [February 2006]

I plan to join the Alumnae Association so that I can better support the women of the future who are breastfeeding their babies. [February 2006]
Mari Wied, Denver, Colorado USA: I received so much help from our local LLL group (when we lived in North Dakota) when our son was a baby. Several years later, I contacted the organization again when our next baby arrived. Just wanted to thank you for your support. Our 'babies' are now 22 and 17:) [February 2006]
Barbara Ann Selenke Taylor, Cincinnati, Ohio USA: I was a member back in 1972-75 when my youngest daughter was a "nursling." The 2 1/2 years that I was able to nurse her is due in large part to the support of the group I was a member of in Cincinnati. My daughter is now married, living in Katy, Texas and has a 1 1/2 year old son whom she is nursing. She is training to be an LLL Leader. So the good that you are doing is continuing on. Thank you for being there, both then, and now. [February 2006]
Barbara Taylor, Bethlehem, Pennsylvania USA

Kathy Gomez, Brigham City, Utah USA: I'd love to hear from any of my old LLL friends in Colorado, Texas and Alaska! I miss the amazing conferences I was fortunate enough to attend in all of those states. How amazing it was to sit and chat with so many of the founding moms! [February 2006]
Petra Hammer, Anchorage, Alaska USA: I became certified and was a LLL leader in Wamsutter. Wyo in the early 80's. I spent a number of years living in Australia where LLL didn't exist but still bought countless copies on THe Womanly Art of Breastfeeding for pregnant friends. I find myself doing that for my daughter's generation now and encourage them whenever possible to contact LLL with all their questions. Wish I could do a 'refresher' course to become involved again. [February 2006]
Bethany Stempien, Raleigh, North Carolina USA: I breastfed my three girls for a total of 9 years, non stop. I miss that part of my life so much. I miss lying in bed watching them snuggle up to me and nurse. My girl's have turned out great and I am so proud of them and I know they would not be the people they are now without all the wonderful and tender moments we shared together nursing. And I definitely could not have done it without the support of LLL. It definitely made things easier knowing that there were others out there enjoying the same moments that I was. [February 2006]
Megan Mellette, Plano, Texas USA: I am a retired LLLL. I was active in Burnsville, MN as Megan Schmidt. I am a few months away from being a Certified Nurse Midwife. I thank LLL for helping discover a "different" way of doing things. [February 2006]
Elizabeth York, Aurora, Colorado USA: Nursing since 1996 and still going strong! [February 2006]
Samantha J. Smith, Decatur, Illinois USA: I was a LLL member in Decatur, Illinois for a short time in 1994-1995. LLL helped me overcome the obstacles I had with my first two children during breastfeeding. At that time, I was a stay at home mom. I went on to become a registered nurse - and nursed my child throughout college (even making "deals" with my instructors to bring along my baby so I could nurse her during class). I loaned my Womanly Art of Breastfeeding book out so much that finally someone had to buy me a new one - which I still use. I now work on the OB unit of one of our local hospitals, am a Certified Lactation Counselor, and I am involved with our local breastfeeding task force. My children are now 18, 13, and 11. [February 2006]
Meg Mangin, Menomonie, Wisconsin USA: I started the La Leche League group in Menomonie in 1979. I'm proud to say that the group is still active. I was the state Coordinator of Leaders for 5 years and retired in 1989. I've resumed my career as a Registered Nurse working in Home Care. Our 3 breastfed babies have grown into marvelous adults and parents. I'm using the counseling skills I learned as a LLLeader by moderating two medical websites for autoimmune diseases: http://www.marshallprotocol.com and http://www.sarcinfo.com. I treasure my memories of LLL and keep in touch with many of the wonderful women I met. [February 2006]
Kathleen Tutolo, Mentor, Ohio USA [January 2006]
Norah Nutter, Myrtle Beach, South Carolina USA: I am a Nurse Practitioner and Lactation Consultant in South Carolina. I love and respect LLL and miss my League friends from the Bristol Tennessee and Virginia area. [January 2006]
Dian J. Korade, West Islip, New York USA: I was a leader early 70's in Long Island, NY. I moved to the Charleston, SC area and continued leadership '73-74. [January 2006]
Susan Pope (Finch) Justesen, Greenwood, South Carolina USA: Hi to all LLL members and leaders from Raleigh, NC, where I lived for twenty years, when I was a member of LLL in the 70s and 80s! I have since remarried (hence the Finch name in parenthesis) and have lived in SC for 6 and a half years now! I'm still teaching Kindermusik and piano and will continue to do so-until I cannot get up off of the floor anymore for my KM classes! We have 7 children between us-my four: Todd, Mary Hunter, Caroline and Virginia Finch and his 3 sons. We have 3 married: Todd (who has a 10 m/o son and another on the way) my daughter, Caroline, and one of Waynes' sons) I am planning to go to the 2007 LLL Convention in Chicago and would love to see some of you there! I hope to have a booth where I can sell the musical and literacy-based products from Do-Re-Me You! division of Kindermusik International) to LLL families. Please let me know what all of you are doing now! [January 2006]
Cameron Smith (formerly Mortimer), Lynnwood, Washington USA: Just surfing around and thought I would see how LLL is doing 25 years later...I was certified as a Leader the year of their 25th anniversary and served 10 years as a leader. Unfortunately, or not, the only babies in my life now are my grandchildren - growing well at breast! [January 2006]
Sherry Kenady, Spokane, Washington USA: Thanks for your effort in all of the literature out there. I have several items in my home library. The Womanly Art of Breastfeeding was referred to me in my first pregnancy by a trusted friend. I faithfully read it cover to cover and felt fully informed about breastfeeding. It helped me discern the truth from ignorance that is still out there, and my children are healthier as a result. I do still have one nursing toddler, but he is my last. I continue to refer pregnant friends to La Leche materials. [January 2006]
Alex A. Fisher, Austin, Texas USA: After more than 10 yrs as a LLLL, I went back to school and got my Master's Degree. I have now been working in public health for over 10 yrs. My first BF "baby" is 29 and my youngest is 20. The experience of being involved w/LLL and with developing the relationships that I did with my children has been invaluable. I'm not sure they or I could have done it any other way. Thank you, thank you, thank you. [January 2006]
Cynthia Anne McLeod, Athens, Georgia USA: Happy 50th (almost!) to LLL! And thank you for letting me help you help mothers and babies in LLL of Georgia and Tennessee. I am living in Athens, Georgia, where I am a media specialist at the same middle school I did my student teaching at almost 30 years ago. I'm also working on a doctorate in children's literature and writing instruction. Oh, yes, LLL also taught me to write! [January 2006]
Dianna Lentz Miller, Columbia City, Indiana USA: Lots of good memories. I was accreditted at 21 in 1980 and remained active until the mid 90's serving as a leader, district advisor, and area professional liasion. I became an IBCLC in 1994 and am now back in school to obtain my rn. My six sons are now ages 15-27 and I have a 3 year old grandson. Drop me a line if you remember me. [January 2006]
Doris Schertz, Lombard, Illinois USA: I attended my first LLL meeting in Elmhurst in 1963, and with Diane Kramer began the Lombard group in 1964, worked on the International Committee with Judy Torgus, became Chairman of Leader Applicants in IL, and was co-program chair for the LLLI Toronto Convention, retiring in 1977 to re-enter the workforce when the oldest of our six children started college and the youngest began kindergarten. Our five boys became a neuro-radiologist, computer analyst, nephrologist, computer engineer and chemistry teacher, and our one daughter a musician/teacher. My husband Dave and I now have 15 breastfed grandchildren, ages 15 to 9 months and have been hosting German college exchange students for the past 2-3 years. After teaching English at Glenbard East High School, I served as Advancement Coordinator at College of DuPage from 1986-2002. In an effort to continue to serve women and girls, I am current Program Vice President for the Illinois American Association of University Women. After age 50 I began running and now at age 66-67 have been named Female Senior Runner of the Year by the Chicago Area Runners Association. Breastfeeding starts a healthy lifestyle; good nutrition and exercising your body, mind and spirit are invaluable in keeping it up. [January 2006]
Linda Bryan, DuBois, Pennsylvania USA: I started a group in Indiana, Pennsylvania back in 1976. I'm not sure if the group still thrives or not. I made many wonderful friends and still keep in touch one of them today! A change of jobs for my husband brought me to DuBois, PA where I participated on a limited basis in La Leche League meetings with an already established group. I was a district adviser back in Indiana and edited a state-wide newsletter for quite a while. La Leche League had a profound impact on my life and that of my family. One of my proudest possessions is a LLL manual that is autographed by several of the 7 founding mothers. Thank you for everything you continue to do for young mothers today. I am proud to say my two grandchildren are also breastfed babies! [January 2006]
Margi Munson, Beaverton, Oregon USA: LLL is where I got my start. The philosophy is what I base my work on as a lactation consultant and the coordinator for Legacy Lactation Services. It was my friend, Monica Wade, who was my leader that encouraged and nurtured me to take on this work. I frequently remember how she nurtured me when I had frustrating times and can place myself right back there when I am counseling moms today. I am celebrating my 21st year as an IBCLC, having been in the first group of women who sat for that exam at Georgetown University in 1985. I am grateful for the loving guidance that she gave me. It became my lifelong passion for which I am grateful as I have a career that has given me great satisfaction and pride. I owe meeting her to the wonderful service provided by LLLI. [January 2006]
Diane Eisenhart, Annandale, New Jersey USA: As a 50+ year old grandma and former leader, I have realized that La Leche League had the most profound influence on my mothering and on who I am today. [January 2006]
Linda L. Bryan, Dubois, Pennsylvania USA: I started a group in Indiana, Pennsylvania back in 1976.
Nancy J. Lee, Vicksburg, Mississippi USA: The website is great. [January 2006]
Ruth McAughey (formerly Fauz), Stoney Creek, Ontario, Canada: I am proud to say that loving guidance helped me to raise three beautiful babies into caring and compassionate adults. One of my favourite stories is when my 10 year old son told me, "Mom, I wish you'd just belt us and get it over with. Instead you sit us on the stairs and go On an On and On (accompanied by eyes rolling) about why we don't hurt animals or other living things!" [January 2006]
Cindy Bristol, Windsor, Colorado USA: My daughter is about to make me the grandomther of a baby girl. She plans to breastfeed. I was disappointed to find that there were no longer any evening meetingsin our area for expectant mothers that are still working during their first preganacy, or for transportaion reasons can't make a daytime meeting. I would love to take my daughter to a meeting because she is a little shy and doesn't drive much. I also was told by a local leader that they are needing more leaders. WOW, this all almost wants to make me active again. [January 2006]
Tish Iwaszuk, Port Orchard, Washington USA: I was a leader In Port Orchard from approximately 1975 through 1983. Sue A. Hogg, Arlington, Texas: I became interested in LLL over 40 years ago when my first child was born. There were no groups in Ft.Worth so I contacted Franklin Park and eventually became the leader in this area....supported by loving moms in Franklin Park. I remained a leader for over 20 years and finally eased into the next part of my life. The positive influence LLL has had over my family of four boys has extended to positive influence over my daughters-in-law and my grandchildren. I have seen changes in mother-baby care become commonplace in our area and I know that La Leche has been responsible for conditions that moms now take for granted. Thank you to all of the founding mothers and thank you to all who still working in the best interests of families everywhere. [January 2006]
Deb Stover, Palmer Lake, Colorado USA: I was a member in Claremore, OK and in San Clemente, CA in the middle and late 1980s. I successfully nursed two adopted children with the help of LLL, after having breastfed my first birth child on my own. [January 2006]
Jacqueline A. Martin, West Jordan, Utah USA: My years as a LLLeader in Chgo.Hts., IL were years I will remember forever. Would like information on how to be a Lactation Spec. out here in Utah, as I would like to change vocations - have worked with Dr.'s for about 25 yrs. I have 7 children, 23 grandchildren and 2 great grandaughters now. (had my 5th child when I joined LLL and my 7th was almost 5 when I had to go back to work so no longer could be a leader as I worked nights so my husband would be home w/the children and most my calls would come when I had to leave for work.I would love to hear from some of the leaders of Chgo. Hts., Park Forest and Homewood, if any of them are still around. I was a member from about 1967 to 1976 or so. Jacky [January 2006]

Sherron Collins, Spring Lake, Michigan USA: I enjoyed reading all the entries, and the chance to compare my life with so many LLL mothers. I was active from 1971 through the mid 80s, and then had the chance to support my own daughter through her at home and at work time. Her daughter may be our only grandchild! I was able to go with the Michigan delegation to LLLI to search for our Lost Leaders. We are currently looking for over 400! I think I spotted one of them on this list, in fact.
