Pat Crosby (Retired LLL Leader) ~ I started and ran from approximately 1975 to 1982 the LLL East Side Manhattan Group (New York City) at the Maternity Center in the East 90's. We had a monthly meeting of 30 to 50 mothers plus babies. The Maternity Center was the first place in New York City to promote birthing centers and played an instrumental role in establishing birthing centers as a viable option for new families.
Among other activities in the state, our group worked with Marian Tompson, founding mother, to save the MD license of Dr. George Wooton. George was being harassed by his county medical society for the many home births he attended - over 250 I believe. We did a public baby/nurse-in at the the New York State Regent's hearing, which was set to de-license George. Recently I had lunch with George at a Young Living event here on the east coast and learned George was on his way to China. It is great to reconnect with such a stalwart pioneer in the rights of birthing mothers and babies.
I also contributed many photographs to the early editions of the Womanly Art of Breastfeeding.
