LLL of Utah was founded in 1963.

Kathy Grossman (ACL, Leader and Alum, 2007) ~ It's a bit incomplete, but here's LLL of Utah's
early history. I'm sure the Ute Indian and Mormon pioneer mothers were nursing their babies way before this, though. The phrases in quotes come from a short history written in 1976 by Diana Miller.

LLL of UTAH started at St. Marks Hospital in Salt Lake City in the fall of 1963

The St. Marks Hospital "head of the nursery", Margo Whitton, and Sister Roseangela at Holy Cross Hospital wanted to help new mothers nurse better, so they contacted Kay Coulson and Diana Miller, women Margo and Roseangela knew had nursed their babies. Margo "familiarized" Kay and Diana with LLL and said she was willing to "pay for supplies to get
started." Kay and Diana started holding meetings every two weeks in hospital rooms at St. Marks in 1963 with "small attendance." Kay and Diana became official Leaders in January 1965. When Diana started having meetings in her home, there was a "boom in mothers."

An early Leader, Aloma Wignell, attended the first LLLI Conference in Chicago in 1964, and Dr. Michael Newton (Niles' husband) spoke in Park City in April 1965.

In 1965, a new Group started in The Avenues (a neighborhood just north of downtown Salt Lake City), and then another Group started in Kearns. So LLL of Utah's Groups grew to three in three years. In 1966, dues were $3.00 and a manual was $2.50, $2.00 for members.

From 1968 to1976, Joyce Kay was Utah's State Coordinator (SC). In 1970 Terrie Cannon became "New Group Chairman," and in 1974 Marjean Haliday became "Chairman of Leader Applications." I'm pretty sure Marjean Haliday is now Marjean Nielson, who is still listed as an
active Leader. If this is the same Marjean, she was accredited in 1969 and is our longest-serving Leader.

In 1974, Linda Carter, R.N., was appointed Area Professional Liaison. The first Area Treasurer was Bennye Adams.

1976: The Utah Insert was first put into LLL News. The insert was later called "Milk 'n Honey." The editor was Ilze Jeske.

1977: JoAnn Hadden became "Area Coordinator" after Joyce Kay.

1978: Janet Oakeson became accredited. Janet is still an active Leader in Nephi, and I believe is our second longest-serving Leader.

1976: 24 Groups and 59 Leaders

1990: 15 Groups and 40 Leaders

2000: 17 Groups

2007: 11 Groups and 36 Leaders.
