HELP FOR LLL GROUPS
GROUP SUPPLIES. The Eastern US LLL has instituted a fund called “Heart-to-Heart” for the purpose of collecting donations for Leaders and the Groups that they lead. The funds will be applied to LLL-related concerns, such as books and office materials for Group libraries, Leader resources, and other related costs. Because we never know when such disasters may strike, we intend to keep this as a permanent account to be used in any similar situations in the future. Please make checks out to LLL–EUS/Katrina Fund and mark “Heart-to-Heart” on the message line.
Donations to Heart-to-Heart can be sent to:
Charlene Jenkins
2809 Pearwood Court
Matthews, NC 28105
ADOPT A GROUP. LLL Groups and Chapters are encouraged to enroll in “Sister-to-Sister,” an adopt-a-Group program. Karen Zeretzke, ACL for Alabama/Mississippi/Louisiana, and Laura Wright, CLA for AL/MS/LA, are gathering names of Leaders and Groups affected by the tragedy. Any Group or Chapter interested in helping a specific Leader or Group can send their information to:
Cindy Garrison
115 White Way
Canonsburg, PA 15317
Cindy will arrange matches as information arrives and send the information to both Groups. Participants in this program can elect to purchase Leader or Group materials using money from their Group treasury. Individuals may also want to send personal donations, such as toys, clothes, toiletries, or gift cards for nation-wide chains. If desired, small gifts for holidays or birthdays could be included.
WORLD WALK. LLL-EUS will delay implementation of projects that were to be supported with 2004 World Breastfeeding Week funds. Instead, copies of WOMANLY ART OF BREASTFEEDING, BREASTFEEDING ANSWER BOOK, and LEADER’S HANDBOOK will be provided to Leaders who have lost theirs due to flooding or other Katrina damage. An account will be set up with LLLI for each affected Group to allow them to begin to replace library materials and information sheets. Dues will also be paid for the Leaders impacted by the hurricane.
In addition, the Eastern and Western Divisions have designated the Joint Projects Money derived from 2005 World Breastfeeding Week Celebrantion funds to projects involved with support of Leaders and breastfeeding mothers in the affected areas of the Gulf States. INFORMATION ON BREASTFEEDING IN EMERGENCIES.
The Online Communication team has updated the LLLI Web page for the general public about emergency breastfeeding, as well as updating the new relactation FAQ and added useful links. http://www.lalecheleague.org/emergency.html
More information has also been added to the LLL Leader Web page on helping mothers who are breastfeeding in emergency situations. http://www.lalecheleague.org/llleaderweb/FIN/cbi/emergency2.html
(This is a password protected section of the Web site accessible to active LLL Leaders and Retired Leaders who are members of the LLLI Alumnae Association.)
BREASTMILK DONATIONS.
The Human Milk Bank Association of North America (HMBANA) asks for help spreading the word that HMBANA milk banks are available to provide milk to Katrina Hurricane victim babies/children with a medically indicated need for human milk and who do not have their own mother's milk available. This will also require an increase in donor mothers. Please inform interested lactating mothers, especially those in states with milk banks, to call their nearest donor milk bank for further information or check http://www.hmbana.com. Approval as a donor involves a triple screening process beginning with an initial phone screening for medical, dietary, and lifestyle factors that might make the donor ineligible, followed by written documentation of their medical history and a signed medical release to be sent to both the mother and the baby's healthcare providers. The last step would be the willingness to have blood work drawn. Our screening process is similar to those used when one donates blood. I am most grateful for your assistance in this matter.
